Fitted Wardrobes Cost: UK Prices for Hinged and Sliding
A fitted wardrobe is customised and installed, which is why it tends to cost more than a freestanding one. Here are the prices for hinged, sliding and larger fitted wardrobes, the budget and mid-range options, what a carpenter charges to build one, the extra costs around the job, how long it takes and what to settle before you ask for quotes.
Fitted wardrobe prices by type
Checkatrade’s fitted wardrobes cost guide prices fitted wardrobes by the number of doors, the door type and whether the design is custom-built.
| Fitted wardrobe | Low | High | Average |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3-door, hinged doors | £2,500 | £4,000 | £3,250 |
| 3-door, sliding doors | £2,800 | £4,600 | £3,700 |
| 6-door, wide | Not given | Not given | £4,800 |
| 2-section, custom-built | Not given | Not given | £3,400 |
Sliding door fitted wardrobe cost
Sliding doors add around £450 to a 3-door design, Checkatrade says, which is the gap between the hinged average of £3,250 and the sliding average of £3,700. Bifold and accordion doors cost extra too.
Budget and mid-range fitted wardrobes
A budget fitted wardrobe comes to around £3,250 for 3 doors, with a simple design, cheaper materials such as MDF or laminate, fewer drawers and a smaller size, Checkatrade says.
On a tighter budget, a carpenter can make a modular wardrobe from a DIY store look built-in. Checkatrade prices that route at about £250 to £400 for a 3-section Ikea Pax wardrobe with doors, plus around £270 a day for the carpenter.
A mid-range fitted wardrobe costs around £4,000 for a more customised design, better materials such as wood or veneer, and soft-close drawers, on Checkatrade’s figures. Most big fitted furniture companies adapt a range of styles rather than making wardrobes from scratch, and a carpenter can often make a custom-built design for a similar price.
What a carpenter charges to build a fitted wardrobe
Checkatrade’s carpentry prices guide gives £800 to £1,400, around £1,100, as the carpenter cost to construct a fitted wardrobe. Bespoke designs and premium materials can push the final price up substantially, the same guide says.
Checkatrade’s fitted wardrobes guide prices carpenter labour at £240 to £300 a day, around £270, so on a job charged by the day the labour comes to a carpenter’s day rate multiplied by the days on site.
What changes the price of a fitted wardrobe
The size and layout, the door type, the storage inside, how complex the installation is, the materials and the style all change the price, Checkatrade says. Drawers cost much more than shelves, and shoe racks, double hanging rails, pull-down rails, jewellery trays and trouser rails all add to it, as do handles, soft-close doors, integrated lighting and mirrors.
Nooks, uneven walls and alcoves make the installation more complex. Fitted wardrobes are made from laminated plywood, particle board, MDF, wood plastic composite or solid wood, and solid wood tends to be the strongest and most durable, according to Checkatrade.
Checkatrade advises comparing like-for-like quotes and checking that materials and labour are included, which works only when every quote describes the same doors, storage and materials.

Extra costs around a fitted wardrobe
The room may need preparing first, from wall cracks, skirting boards and picture rails to an uneven floor or carpet that needs cutting, and the installer can usually do that at extra cost, Checkatrade says.
Integrated lighting needs an electrician at £45 to £60 an hour, and plastering and painting need a decorator at around £15 per m² for woodwork, on Checkatrade’s figures.
A 3-door sliding wardrobe with lighting and painted woodwork
| 3-door sliding door fitted wardrobe, average | £3,700 |
|---|---|
| Electrician to wire lighting, 2 hours at £45 to £60 an hour | £90 to £120 |
| Decorator for 8 m² of woodwork at £15 per m² | £120 |
Total £3,910 to £3,940
All figures come from Checkatrade's fitted wardrobes cost guide and carry no VAT label. Leaves out preparing the room and taking the old wardrobe away.
Removing old wardrobes and the waste costs extra as well, at around £225 a week for a midi 4 to 5 yard skip or £64 to £94 an hour for a man with a van, on Checkatrade’s figures.
Ask who takes the old wardrobe away before you book
The installer may not have a waste carrier licence, Checkatrade says, and if they cannot take the old wardrobe and the waste, clearing them falls to you, at a cost on top of the quote.
How long a fitted wardrobe takes
Installing a fitted wardrobe takes one to two days, Checkatrade’s fitted wardrobes guide says. Checkatrade’s carpentry prices guide says constructing a fitted wardrobe usually takes two to five days.
Planning a fitted wardrobe
Checkatrade’s planning steps start with what you need to store and where the wardrobe goes, then the inside and outside design, before advice and prices from local fitters and a final design that matches your home.
