Checkatrade’s new staircase cost guide prices each type of staircase supplied and installed, and puts an average new staircase at £1,500 to £4,000, around £2,750.

Oak, glass, spiral, floating and metal staircases

An oak staircase costs £1,450 to £1,950 for a standard one-storey straight flight, supplied and installed, Checkatrade says.

Checkatrade prices a straight glass staircase with glass balustrades at £5,000 to £25,000, and says the glass balustrade panels have to meet load requirements.

A spiral staircase costs £2,500 to £15,000 in timber and £4,000 to £17,500 in metal, according to Checkatrade, which says a spiral does not work as the main staircase in most UK homes.

A floating staircase, also called a cantilever staircase, costs £20,000 to £80,000 on Checkatrade’s figures. It is usually bespoke and often needs a structural engineer’s calculations as part of a building regulations application, the same guide says.

A metal staircase costs £2,500 to £9,500, with steel suited to indoor stairs and aluminium to outdoor ones, Checkatrade says.

Staircase installation cost: day rates by trade

The prices by type include installation. Hired by the day, the trades on a staircase job charge for labour only, with materials quoted separately, Checkatrade’s new staircase cost guide says, and the carpenter fits the staircase structure, the banisters and the handrail.

What changes the price of a new staircase

The size and shape of the staircase, the materials, how complex it is, access, any structural alterations, the number of storeys, decoration and accessories, and the banisters and spindles all change the price, Checkatrade says.

Structural work to walls or floors, finishing such as painting, staining, carpeting and trim, accessibility features such as specialised handrails, customisation and removing the old staircase can all add to the bill, according to Checkatrade.

How long it takes to fit a new staircase

A standard straight staircase takes one to two days to install and a half landing, oak or spiral design two to four days once delivered, with at least half a day more to remove an old staircase, Checkatrade says.

Replacing a staircase takes one to four days, and a bespoke timber staircase three to five days or more, Checkatrade adds.

Staircase renovation cost: spindles, handrail and carpet

Most staircase renovation is about looks, Checkatrade’s staircase renovation costs guide says, and if a tradesperson finds structural problems, the cost rises and the staircase may need replacing.

Creaking treads as the joints dry and loosen, dents, and stains where untreated oak gets wet are common problems with oak stairs, and most can be fixed without replacing the staircase, Checkatrade says.

New spindles cost £30 to £150, around £90, and a new handrail or banister £40 to £120, around £80, on Checkatrade’s staircase renovation figures.

Carpet for a single straight staircase costs £75 to £100 to install and the carpet itself £7 to £30 per m², while a painter and decorator charges £180 to £200 a day, according to the same guide.

Building control and planning permission for a new staircase

When you get quotes, Checkatrade advises asking what building regulations approval is needed and who arranges it, and puts a building control officer’s fee to inspect and approve a staircase at around £200.

The staircase regulations for a house, in Approved Document K, set a rise of 150mm to 220mm, a going of 220mm to 300mm and a pitch of no more than 42 degrees.

You do not normally need planning permission to refurbish or replace a staircase, Checkatrade says, but you need to apply for listed building consent for most building work, internal and external, to a listed building, according to Nottingham City Council. The council’s My Property tool shows whether a property is a listed building.

Getting an accurate staircase quote

For an accurate quote, tell the carpenter about the staircase you want and the one you have now, Checkatrade says.

Whether a joiner or a carpenter makes your staircase, Checkatrade’s advice is to get several quotes and check each firm’s public liability insurance, examples of staircase work, reviews and whether the materials are included.
